Breathwork for Balance

I’m writing this on the week of the Equinox.

I love these celestial events as milestones and markers and reminders. Seasons change. Light and dark are in constant play. Seasons return again. Life is a cycle. 

But when it comes to actually feeling a sense of balance and inner peace, we need to make it personal. We need to find it in our bodies. And the most powerful and efficient way to shift our mood or mental state is to use the breath.  

You can locate balance in your mind-body anytime with this simple, yet profound, breathwork technique called sama vritti, or equal breathing.

How To Do Sama Vritti Breathwork

  1. First, just notice your natural breath.

  2. Begin to assign a gentle count from 1-5 on your inhale.

  3. Assign the same count (1 to 5) to your exhale.

  4. After a few rounds, increase the count to 6. Inhale for 6 counts. Exhale for 6 counts.

  5. Continue for a minimum of 1 minute, up to 10 minutes.*

  6. Pause. Notice how the technique felt for you.
